The deal estimates Mercedes at £4.6 billion – an unprecedented figure for an F1 team – following the McLaren team was appraised at £3.5 billion in a change of ownership structure last September. The Austrian executive, who holds one-third of Mercedes F1, would sell a shareholding approximately 5%. The 53-year-old will remain as team principal and chief executive officer if the sale goes through. Shareholder Breakdown The other shareholders in Mercedes F1 are Mercedes and chemicals giant Ineos Group, who each also own one-third of the enterprise. A Mercedes spokesperson stated: "We will be making no comment on this. The management structure of the team will remain unaltered, and all three partners are dedicated to the ongoing success of Mercedes-Benz in Formula One." Valuation Growth The deal would represent a substantial rise in value of the Mercedes team since Ineos Group bought its stake for £208 million in 2022. The rise demonstrates the expansion in valuations of F1 teams in the past few years due to the growing popularity of the sport around the world. This was also seen in the box-office performance of the Formula 1 film featuring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which was released in summer 2023 and earned over $630 million (£458 million) at cinemas worldwide. The film represents Pitt's most successful movie and the most successful sports film to date. Present Performance Mercedes are second in the constructors' championship, trailing McLaren Racing, with three Grands Prix remaining in the current championship. Their lead driver George Russell has secured victory in 2 of the 21 races this year and is in fourth place in the individual standings behind McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen. Mercedes won a unprecedented eight straight constructors' championships and seven drivers' titles, six for Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, between 2014 to 2021.
